Frank Jaeger is born in the early 1960s, the child of a Vietnamese woman and a German-American, in the middle of the Second Indochina War. Orphaned, a half-white, at the end of the war he is forced into one of the communist reeducations camps of the new government. He is saved by Big Boss, who liberates him and the other prisoners. He takes Frank in, spends years training him to be a formidable soldier on the various battlefields of the world. Frank spends his teenage years as a mercenary.

War defines his life from the beginning, he won’t be able to escape its grasp for the rest of his life.
